Science fiction is when fantasy and reality can be fused as one as science is tested and pushed further than its limits. Science fiction implements technology in a whole new way by emphasizing the importance of scientific breakthroughs along with its positive and negative effects.
We all know that plot and events need to be believable. Yet, in science fiction, the whole concept of something is difficult to adhere. Science fiction has alternative possibilities when it comes to technology that creates "suspension of disbelief". In science fiction, natural science is used to uncover the conclusions of certain elements wether "fantasy" can really become "reality". For example, rooftop solar-panels. Rooftop solar panels is something that is not used in today's technology. There, a person would have a disbelief and think, "How is it even possible to have a whole entire house roof be made of solar panel? How would that work? Wouldn't that be ugly looking"? When it comes to science fiction, this structure of solar panels is uncalled for and totally out of the box, giving off that "suspension of disbelief", where a person doubts the ability technology has, with the effective outcome it may have.
Science fiction is made up of scientific breakthroughs that can go either way--positive or negative. Science fiction provides potential scientific explanations to various functional elements. It mainly uses the evidence and answers from the past, present, and scientific nature. These evidences are all an attempt to better and utilize today's technology advances. There can be a predictable idea of something, and with scientific thoughts and even tests, the outcome of that something can either be effective or the other way around. Sometimes, the negative consequences outweigh the positive effect. It sometimes can create an imbalance that may build up the conflict into the science fiction genre into a much more deeper and meaningful way. For example, an attempt to create a cure for cancer. In science fiction, using scientific evidence would allow a person to conclude wether or not a cure for cancer can be a good thing. Yet, it can also go the other way around. This is what science fiction is all about. This example clearly illustrates itself in the movie "I am Legend", where a cure for cancer is made. Although, the consequences, based on this movie, had positive as well as negative outcomes. The positive outcome included that cancer was cured and cancer-patients were free from cancer. The negative, however, were very crucial. The negative effect was that the patients who got the vaccine for cancer all mutated into something dangerous, flesh-eating, monster-like living things. The movie well demonstrates the main concept of science-fiction. Science fiction, with it technological advances and attempts, can either turn out to be with positive consequences or negative consequences. These positive and negative outcomes do help to build up the conflict in some way.
With scientific breakthroughs with good and bad effects and a suspension of disbelief, the conflict builds up into the science fiction genre. It is those evidences from science of nature that gives those alternative explanations of functional elements, that really are an attempt to utilize todays technology. With the idea of making "fantasy" become "reality", science fiction is expressed in a much deeper way.
Hey Traci!
ReplyDeleteI will be commenting on your sci-fi essay by intro, body, conclusion, and my overall impression (:
Intro: I like how you explain what science fiction is in the first sentence, “Science fiction is when fantasy and reality can be fused as one as science is tested and pushed further than its limits.”But shouldn’t it be “used” instead “fused”? Unless you meant to you fused? Haha. I can’t find your thesis statement. Is it in there? If it is can you point it out for me xD
Body: Your first example for suspension of disbelief gives a well told instance about the rooftop solar panels is pretty cool. Those questions you mention about it were actually what I was thinking about them when I first heard about it, haha. (“How is it even possible to have a whole entire house roof be made of solar panel? How would that work? Wouldn't that be ugly looking?”) Your second example with I am Legend was good too! It matched the concept about when you explain how there can be negative consequences. (“The negative effect was that the patients who got the vaccine for cancer all mutated into something dangerous, flesh-eating, monster-like living things.”)
There’s a couple of grammatical errors, 1st fragment: “For example, an attempt to create a cure for cancer.” 2nd fragment: “For example, rooftop solar-panels.” 3rd fragment: “For example, an attempt to create a cure for cancer.” 1st misspelled word: “In science fiction, natural science is used to uncover the conclusions of certain elements >>wether<< "fantasy" can really become "reality".” 2nd misspelled word: “In science fiction, using scientific evidence would allow a person to conclude >>wether<< or not a cure for cancer can be a good thing.” For this sentence you put, “"How is it even possible to have a whole entire house roof be made of solar panel?” –you should put ‘it is’ instead for ‘is it.’ In this sentence you put, “It sometimes can create an imbalance that may build up the conflict into the science fiction genre into a much more deeper and meaningful way.” – you should just take out the ‘more’ before the word ‘deeper.’ Put “its” where it has these two bars | | around it in this sentence, “Science fiction, with | it | technological advances and attempts, can either turn out to be with positive consequences or negative consequences.” Oh one last thing put, “today’s” in this sentence: “It is those evidences from science of nature that gives those alternative explanations of functional elements, that really are an attempt to utilize todays technology.”
Conclusion: I think repeated your intro in a different way? Haah, I like how you mention about how scientific breakthroughs have good and bad side effects to them.
Overall: Good job. There are a few simple errors but you can still fix them! I still don’t know where your thesis statement is. Lol ;p I hope you can point it out for me. Hahha, I would’ve wanted to see more science fiction in your perspective though, because I can barely hear your voice in the essay, unless it’s just me being really delirious. Haha. Good essay though, you explain about what sci-fi is.
Good luck on your final sci-fi essay! (:

Hey traci, soo I'm gonna comment on your essay now.
ReplyDeleteIntro: You start off your essay explaining what sci-fi is really well. And i really like your thesis. But I think you can put more explanation on what sci-fi is.
Body: I agree with Shannel on some of the fragments she pointed out in your essay. I would also like to see more examples to support your ideas especially for this sentence: "There can be a predictable idea of something, and with scientific thoughts and even tests, the outcome of that something can either be effective or the other way around. Sometimes, the negative consequences outweigh the positive effect." Using I Am Legend is a good example, but your essay would be more elaborate if you use other examples. Just fix the grammatical errors Shannel pointed out.
Conclusion: You restate your thesis in a new light. I understand it well. I really like how put it in this sentence too: :It is those evidences from science of nature that gives those alternative explanations of functional elements, that really are an attempt to utilize todays technology."
Overall: Your essay was well written. But you need more examples and fix those errors in your body. Other than that, your essay is really good.
Hi Traci,
ReplyDeleteI think Shannel and Sharmaine were accurate in recommending more examples. It's the trait of "ideas"...you need specifics to support your thesis. Right now, most of the essay is pretty general.
Also, it sounds like some of your material in the first paragraph should be enclosed in quotation marks. It sounds like a definition taken from another sources.
My last comment is that the essay would be stronger if you wrote more simply and directly. Sometimes those thesaurus, "twenty dollar" words actually make the writing less specific and more vague and so do not strenthen the piece.
